So, is Claude better than ChatGPT? On the independent rankings, yes, by a modest margin: Claude’s best models outscore OpenAI’s in Arena’s blind votes and on Artificial Analysis’s index. In the apps themselves, ChatGPT does more, starting with image generation. Which of those counts for more depends on how you spend your day.
This comparison isn’t based on hands-on testing. The numbers come from two independent scorekeepers, Arena and Artificial Analysis, plus each company’s own help pages, all checked on October 2, 2026. The date matters: Claude Sonnet 5.5 came out on September 28, and ChatGPT’s $500 Pro 500 plan arrived on September 29. Each company has shipped at least four new models since July, and the leaderboards reshuffle after every one.
Claude vs ChatGPT: the short answer by task
| If you mostly… | Better pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Write, edit or summarize text | Claude | In blind votes on Arena, Claude’s top models outrank all of OpenAI’s |
| Code with an agent (Claude Code or Codex) | Toss-up | The independent coding index is tied; Codex costs less per task and has a free tier on a lighter model |
| Make or edit images | ChatGPT | Claude doesn’t generate photos or illustrations |
| Want one app for shopping, reservations and health records (US) | ChatGPT | More built in, though some features are US-only |
| Hate ads | Claude | Anthropic says Claude stays ad-free; ChatGPT shows ads on Free and Go |
| Want to spend the least | ChatGPT | Free chats are unlimited, and the paid entry plan is $8 |
That’s October’s table, not a permanent one.
What the independent rankings say
Launch-day benchmark tables come from the company that launched the model. OpenAI’s table for GPT-6 Astra has it ahead of Claude Fable 5.1 on most rows, which is what you’d expect from a table a vendor publishes about its own launch. Two scorekeepers with nothing to sell are more useful: Arena and Artificial Analysis.
Arena: what people prefer in blind chats
Arena, the site formerly called LMArena, shows you two anonymous answers and asks which is better. Its text leaderboard on September 30 covered about 8.6 million votes across 410 models. Google’s Gemini 4 Argon is first, though Arena still marks it preliminary. Claude models fill the next six places and the ninth (several are older versions or different effort settings of the same models). The best OpenAI entry is GPT-5.6 Sol, in 20th. GPT-6 Astra, the model in OpenAI’s headlines, is 30th.
The gap is real but not huge. At the settings Arena tested, Claude Opus 5.5 scores 1504 and GPT-5.6 Sol 1484. On an Elo-style scale, 20 points means Claude’s answer wins about 53 matchups out of 100. Arena also tests the models directly rather than through the Claude or ChatGPT apps, and it measures which answer people prefer, which isn’t the same as which answer is right.
Arena Agent and Artificial Analysis: longer, harder tasks
On Arena’s agent leaderboard, which scores multi-step work with tools, Claude Fable 5.1 is first, Claude Opus 5.5 second and GPT-6 Astra third.
Artificial Analysis runs its own test battery instead of trusting vendor numbers. Its Intelligence Index had Opus 5.5 at 58 and both GPT-6 Astra and Fable 5.1 at 53, with GPT-5.6 Sol (the chat model on ChatGPT Plus) at 47, all at maximum effort. On its Coding Agent Index, Astra in Codex and Fable 5.1 in Claude Code tied at 62, and Astra got there for roughly 60% of the cost per task. Astra also beat Fable 5.1 on Terminal-Bench 4.0, 59% to 52%, and led on two other tests, AutomationBench-AA and GDP.pdf, in results published before Opus 5.5 launched.
Treat any one number as a snapshot. In the days after Astra launched, Artificial Analysis revised its index twice, and Astra went from five points behind Fable 5.1 to tied with it.
Put together, that’s a narrow Claude lead on general answer quality, a split on agent work, and a cost edge for Astra over Fable 5.1. It’s a long way from “Claude crushes ChatGPT,” and just as far from the reverse.
Claude vs ChatGPT pricing: what each tier gets you
Both sell a $20 plan and a ladder of bigger ones. What the money buys differs more than the prices suggest. Plan details come from OpenAI’s model-by-plan help page and Claude’s pricing page.
| Price | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | Free: GPT-5.6 Luna, unlimited everyday text chats, capped images, files and voice. Ads where they’re being tested | Free: Sonnet 5.5, usage resets every five hours. No ads, no Claude Code |
| $8 | Go: the same Luna model with higher limits. Ads | None |
| $20 | Plus: GPT-5.6 Sol in chat. GPT-6 Astra only in Work and Codex | Pro ($17 a month if billed annually): Opus 5.5 included, Fable 5.1 billed as extra usage. Claude Code and Cowork included |
| $100 | Pro 100: adds Extra High thinking and GPT-6 Pro (Astra) in chat | Max 5x: five times Pro’s usage, Fable 5.1 included within a weekly cap |
| $200 | Pro 200: higher limits than Pro 100 | Max 20x: twenty times Pro’s usage |
| $500 | Pro 500: highest limits, plus Astra Ultrafast in Work and Codex | None |
The row that matters for most people is the $20 one. Claude Pro puts Opus 5.5 in your chat window, and Anthropic says it matches Fable 5.1 on most work. ChatGPT Plus puts GPT-5.6 Sol there. Astra on Plus is limited to Work and Codex, and reaching it in plain chat takes a $100 plan. On Artificial Analysis’s index, Opus 5.5 scores 58 and Sol 47. On Arena, Opus 5.5 is 4th and Sol is 20th.
Claude’s side has a catch. Every paid plan carries a five-hour session cap plus a weekly cap, so a heavy day can end early. ChatGPT Free and Go get unlimited everyday text chat, which Claude’s free plan doesn’t match.
What each one can’t do
What Claude isn’t good at
Claude can’t make pictures. Anthropic’s help center says it doesn’t generate photos or illustrations the way image tools do; it builds charts, diagrams and interactive visuals out of HTML and SVG instead. ChatGPT’s Images 2.5 shipped September 8. If images are part of your week, that’s a flat gap.
Usage limits are the other common complaint, and the five-hour and weekly caps are the obvious reason. Fable 5.1, the top model, costs extra on Pro. Anthropic also noted in June that many users had complained about Fable 5’s cybersecurity safeguards being overly broad.
What ChatGPT isn’t good at
Ads. ChatGPT Free and Go show them. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on February 9 and keeps adding regions, and says ads don’t change the answers. Plus and above are ad-free, and OpenAI’s help page says Free users can switch to an ad-free option with tighter limits. Anthropic has said Claude will stay ad-free. A promise isn’t a guarantee, but today there’s nothing to opt out of.
The lineup takes some untangling. Free and Go chat runs on GPT-5.6 Luna. Plus chat runs on GPT-5.6 Sol. Below the $100 tier, the GPT-6 models live in Work and Codex with allowances separate from chat, and Terra and Luna can’t be picked in regular chats at all. OpenAI’s own help page has to explain why some people can’t find Sol. Nobody’s naming department deserves a medal this year, on either side.
So, is Claude better than ChatGPT? Pick by what you do
If you’re paying $20 and most of your work is text (writing, editing, long documents, research, code), take Claude Pro. You get the higher-scoring model, no ads on any tier, and Claude Code and Cowork in the price. Expect to bump into the usage caps on heavy days.
If you want images, or one app that also books restaurants and, in the US, connects your health records, take ChatGPT Plus. That breadth is its real advantage.
If you’re paying nothing, start with ChatGPT Free when you chat a lot, because the text chats are unlimited. Start with Claude Free if ads bother you or you only need a handful of good answers a day. Sonnet 5.5 isn’t on Arena’s text board yet, so there’s no clean quality verdict between the two free models.
If you code for a living, run both for a week. The best independent coding index has them tied, Codex costs less per task and has a free route in (on a lighter model than Astra), and Claude Code needs a paid plan.
None of this will hold for long. The top spot on Artificial Analysis’s index changed hands more than once in September alone. For the wider field, including Google’s Gemini 4 Argon at the top of Arena’s text board, see Arena’s full text leaderboard.
FAQ
Is Claude better than ChatGPT for coding?
It’s close. Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index tied Claude Fable 5.1 (in Claude Code) with GPT-6 Astra (in Codex) at 62, and Astra cost less per task. Arena’s agent ranking puts Fable 5.1 first and Astra third. Codex works on ChatGPT’s free plan (on a lighter model than Astra), while Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan. Choose on workflow and budget, since the leaderboard gap is too small to decide it.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT for writing?
People prefer Claude’s answers in blind tests. On Arena’s text leaderboard Claude models fill most of the top ten, and the best OpenAI model is 20th. That measures preference, not correctness, so fact-check either one. It’s the closest independent evidence on writing quality, though it isn’t proof.
Is Claude actually the best AI right now?
Not on every list. Claude models lead Arena’s agent board, and Claude Opus 5.5 tops Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index. Google’s Gemini 4 Argon is first on Arena’s text board, and GPT-6 Astra leads several individual tests. “Best” depends on the task, and the top spot has been changing hands month to month.
Is it worth switching from ChatGPT to Claude?
Switch if your work is mostly text or code, you want an ad-free product and you rarely generate images. Stay if you rely on image generation or ChatGPT’s health, shopping and reservation features. Both sell $20 monthly plans, so trying the other for a month costs about $20.
Is Claude banned?
Not for regular users: Claude works normally for the public. Two separate disputes explain the headlines. In March 2026 the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk after a dispute over how the military could use Claude. Courts have split: a federal appeals court upheld one of the two designations on September 25, which restricts Claude in Defense Department work, and Anthropic is weighing further appeals. Separately, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 were switched off on June 12 under US export controls and restored on July 1.
